 | A Matter of Time : 4 As a child, I desperately wanted to see Tony and Doug returned to their own time and place; the hope that they would was one of the things that encouraged me to watch the series each week. I can recall how frustrated I was when, in Crack of Doom, Tony returns to the complex only to discover that time has been frozen there. Of course, in order to un-freeze time, Tony has to return to the past
Similarly, I experienced an enormous surge of hope during the opening scenes of Merlin the Magician, in which, with a mere wave of a hand, the legendary sorcerer brings Tony and Doug back to 1968but then, an instant later, sends them off into the vortex once more! He doesnt even give them time to say hello to any of the staff in the Tunnel complex! I did derive some solace from the reunion between Tony, Doug and Ann in The Kidnappers, but even that offerred cold comfort, for at the storys conclusion, though Ann was returned safely to the Tic-Toc base, Tony and Doug were lost in the vortex once more. Still, I took heart in the concern that Woody, Ray, and Ann displayed for their unfortunate colleagues, and in every story I found some justification to be optimistic about Tony and Dougs ultimate fate. Each time the Tunnel staff retreived an artefact, or an individual, from the past, I told myself that, someday, Doctors Newman and Phillips would emerge from the mouth of that artificial corridor through time to a rapturous reunion with their colleagues. Yes. As Ray said at the conclusion of Rendezvous with Yesterday, it was, only, a matter of time
